Sri Lanka Inland Revenue Service Examination 2026

The Public Service Commission and the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development have invited applications from qualified Sri Lankan citizens for the Open Competitive Examination for recruitment to Grade III of the Sri Lanka Inland Revenue Service.

According to the official Gazette notification, recruitment is expected to be made for 200 vacancies. Selection will be based on the results of a written competitive examination followed by a general interview.

Eligible applicants must submit their applications through the Department of Examinations online application portal before the closing date. Applications submitted through post, email or any other method will not be accepted.

Salary Scale

The monthly salary scale applicable to this position is:

Rs. 82,150 – 10 × 2,400 – 8 × 2,940 – 17 × 3,900 – Rs. 195,970

Salary code: SL-1-2025. Salary payments will be made according to the applicable provisions of Public Administration Circular No. 10/2025.

General Eligibility Requirements

  • The applicant must be a citizen of Sri Lanka.
  • The applicant must possess an excellent character.
  • The applicant must be physically, mentally and otherwise suitable to serve in any part of Sri Lanka.
  • A person holding a priestly position in a religious denomination is not eligible to apply.
  • An applicant must not have appeared for this open competitive examination more than two times.
  • All required qualifications must have been completed on or before the closing date of applications.

Educational and Professional Qualifications

Applicants must possess at least one of the following qualifications:

A degree with a First Class or Second Class awarded by a state university or a foreign university recognised by the University Grants Commission.
A degree with a First Class or Second Class awarded by a university established under an Act of Parliament in Sri Lanka.
A recognised degree with a First Class or Second Class under Section 25A of the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978. The course duration must be at least three years.
An Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka.
A Chartered Accountant.

The relevant educational or professional qualification must be effective on or before the closing date of applications.

Age Limit

For general applicants, the applicant must be:

  • Not less than 22 years of age.
  • Not more than 28 years of age.
Eligible birth date range: Applicants must have been born on or before 31 August 2004 and on or after 31 August 1998.

The maximum age limit for applicants already serving in the Public Service or Provincial Public Service is 35 years, subject to the conditions stated in the Gazette notification.

Recruitment and Selection Method

Recruitment will be conducted through the following stages:

  1. Written Competitive Examination
  2. General Interview
  3. Appointment according to merit and available vacancies

Candidates must obtain the required minimum mark in every examination subject. Candidates who qualify will be ranked according to the total marks obtained in the written examination.

Examination Syllabus

1. Comprehension

This paper will evaluate the candidate’s ability to understand information, communication skills, summarising ability, interpretation and creativity. The paper will consist of objective-type questions.

2. Intelligence Test

This paper will evaluate reasoning, substitution, interpretation, identifying relationships, transformation, problem-solving, understanding cause-and-effect relationships, prediction, organisation of information, recognising patterns and following instructions. It will consist of multiple-choice questions.

3. General Knowledge

This paper will test knowledge of Sri Lanka’s geographical, political, economic, social and cultural environment, internationally important current affairs, and developments in science and technology. The paper will include multiple-choice and short-answer questions.

General Interview

The general interview will be conducted to verify whether applicants possess the required qualifications and physical fitness. Marks will not be awarded for the general interview.

Applicants who obtain at least 40 marks in each written examination subject may be considered for the interview according to their total marks and the number of available vacancies.

Examination Medium

The examination will be conducted in:

Sinhala Tamil English

Applicants may select only one language medium. All three question papers must be answered in the same selected medium. The selected examination medium cannot be changed after submitting the application.

How to Apply Online

  1. Download and carefully read the official Gazette notification.
  2. Download and read the common recruitment application instructions.
  3. Visit the Department of Examinations online application portal.
  4. Select the relevant Inland Revenue Service Grade III examination.
  5. Complete the online application in the English language.
  6. Enter your name, National Identity Card number, contact number, email address, qualifications and examination medium accurately.
  7. Pay the examination fee using an approved payment method.
  8. Submit the completed application before 9.00 PM on 31 August 2026.
  9. Download or print the submitted application and payment confirmation for future reference.

Examination Fee and Payment Methods

The examination fee may be paid through the payment methods provided in the online application system, including:

  • Any bank credit card
  • Any internet-enabled bank debit card
  • Bank of Ceylon online banking or BOC Flex application
  • Any Bank of Ceylon branch
The full examination fee must be paid correctly. Applications with underpayments or overpayments may be rejected. Fees paid will not be refunded or transferred to another examination.

Examination Admission Card

Admission cards will be issued online to applicants who submit correctly completed applications on or before the closing date.

The Department of Examinations is expected to inform candidates through an official web notice, SMS or email when admission cards are available.

Candidates must print the admission card, certify their signature where required and present it at the examination centre. Issuing an admission card does not automatically confirm that the candidate has fulfilled all eligibility requirements.

Acceptable Identity Documents

Candidates must prove their identity at the examination centre using one of the following valid documents:

  • National Identity Card
  • Valid passport
  • Valid Sri Lankan driving licence

Important Service Conditions

  • The appointment is permanent and pensionable.
  • Selected candidates will be subject to a three-year probation period.
  • The first Efficiency Bar Examination must be passed within the period specified in the service minute.
  • The required official language proficiency must be obtained within three years of joining the service.
  • Appointments will be subject to the Establishments Code, Financial Regulations, Public Service Commission rules and the Sri Lanka Inland Revenue Service Minute.

Instructions for Current Public Officers

Applicants currently employed in the Public Service or Provincial Public Service must submit a copy of the application to the head of their institution for inclusion in their personal file. When called for the interview, they may be required to produce a certified copy of the application and a service confirmation letter.
